This dataset was collected by JPL's airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) on August 20, 1992, at an altitude of 20,000 m over Moffett Field, California. It contains an image cube that illustrates the instrument's data output. The top of the cube is a false‑color image highlighting the structure of water and evaporation ponds, while the side displays the edges of all 224 AVIRIS spectral channels. The dataset spans the visible‑to‑infrared spectral range and shows strong responses in specific areas due to the presence of red brine shrimp in the evaporation ponds.

Description

Dataset Description

This "image cube" from JPL's airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) demonstrates the volume of data returned by the instrument. AVIRIS captured the data on 20 August 1992 from a NASA ER‑2 aircraft flying at 20,000 m (65,000 ft) over Moffett Field in the southern San Francisco Bay area, California. The top of the cube is a false‑color image that emphasizes the structure of water bodies and the right‑hand evaporation pond. The airport at Moffett Field is also visible at the top of the cube. The side of the cube shows slices that display the top across all 224 AVIRIS spectral channels. The top of the side corresponds to the visible spectral region (wavelength 400 nm) and the bottom to the infrared region (2,500 nm). The side is false‑color, ranging from black/blue (low response) to red (high response). A particularly noteworthy feature is the high‑response region in the upper‑right corner of the larger side. This response lies in the red portion of the visible spectrum (≈ 700 nm) and is caused by the presence of one‑centimeter‑long (half‑inch) red brine shrimp in the evaporation pond.
